Yoga Flow: Pink Floyd Style

The Dark Side of the Moon Yoga Flow
For millennia the moon has captivated our imaginations with its rich symbolism and memorizing glow. On October 3rd, celebrate the full moon with a yoga flow workshop set to the music of Pink Floyd’s legendary concept album The Dark Side of the Moon. Whether you follow the phases of the moon or just enjoy looking at up at the sky to experience its brilliance, you will love this workshop. The sequence will include Sun Salutations as well as the somewhat less known Moon Salutations. The Sun Salutations will create energy and heat in the body as you flow to the music. Moon Salutations will cool and calm your nervous system and allow the mind to clear and connect to the music. Moon Salutations provide a powerful spiritual and psychological counterbalance to the Sun Salutation. Just as Sun Salutations allow you to physically enact the hero’s journey by stepping forward and lunging into life’s challenge’s, Pink Floyd’s music will open your heart and mind to the importance of living one’s own life and embracing the unknown. The song “Time” looks at the manner in which the passage of time can control one’s life and is followed by a retreat into solitude and withdrawal in the song “Breath.” The flow in Moon Salutations represent the descent of sinking and turning the focus inward to discover one’s creativity.
With her signature free-flowing style of yoga, Kat Mackenzie’s classes and workshops are the perfect balance between strength and surrender. She uses clear detailed alignment cues mixed with moments of spontaneous movement to encourage students to follow her guidance but also explore their own paths within the music and flow. Kat feels this combination of structure and experimentation is ultimately how we find our way in yoga and in life. She currently teaches Hatha, Vinyasa and Prenatal yoga in both group and private settings.
If you are not familiar with The Dark Side of the Moon, the 30-year best selling album by 70’s rock group Pink Floyd, you will be after this workshop. The 1973 release of The Dark Side of the Moon is seen as a symbolic moment in the history of rock music. The concept album’s themes include conflict, greed, aging and mental illness. Beginning and ending with a fading heartbeat, each song links to the next reflecting the various stages of human life. The Dark Side of the Moon explores the nature of the human experience and man’s ability to feel empathy. From mocking modern greed and consumerism in the albums most commercially successful song “Money,” to “On the Run” which evokes the stress and anxiety of modern travel, Pink Floyd captures raw emotion in their lyrics and musical composure.
Flowing through this powerful sequence in a group will create unity and allow you to explore the concept behind the song “Eclipse” which forces you to recognize the common traits shared by humanity. A basic knowledge of yoga, posture alignment and Sun Salutations is needed for this workshop. The sequence will be taught to the music with little attention given to alignment. Just as the moon and this album go through phases, students are encouraged to embrace the emotions the music and flow may elicit and occasionally venture outside of the group sequence.
